Genesis 11:28 · World English Bible

Genesis 11:28 Meaning Haran Died in the Land

Haran died in the land of his birth, in Ur of the Chaldees, while his father Terah was still alive.

What does Genesis 11:28 mean?

Ur of the Chaldees is Moon City, the whole watery country of the feelings, and to dwell there is to live governed by moods and cravings. This is the ground a person is born into, the emotional life that surrounds an infant before any higher faculty wakes.

Ur of the Chaldees is Moon City, the whole watery country of the feelings, and to dwell there is to live governed by moods and cravings. This is the ground a person is born into, the emotional life that surrounds an infant before any higher faculty wakes. Abram will later be told to leave this place, and leaving Ur means moving out of Moon City, up out of the pull of the emotions toward the higher side of the mind.

Haran carries the sense of a mountain and of separation, a reaching toward higher ground that gives way while a person is still bound to the feelings. The death of that reaching in the land of its birth is the plain fact that an aspiration formed inside the emotions cannot survive there. The higher climb only holds once a person has left the country of the moods.

Live Genesis 11:28 today

  1. When a strong feeling arrives today, sadness, excitement, the late-night certainty, let yourself feel it fully but make no decisions and send no messages from inside it. Write the decision down and look again when the tide has turned.
  2. If someone comes to you fired up or heartbroken with a big plan, do not pour water on it. Say you want to hear it again in a week, and mean it.
  3. In a tense moment at work or in traffic, hold off on the reply for sixty seconds. The sentence that forms in the heat is almost never the sentence you would have chosen.

Which of my resolutions keep dying because I only ever make them when I am feeling something?

Buddhism

Feelings arise, hold for a while, and pass, and taking them for the ground you stand on is where the trouble starts. A plan made inside a mood belongs to the mood and goes when it does.

Stoicism · Epictetus

He separates what is in our hands from what is not, and says the storm of feeling is not in our hands but the response to it is. Resolve born in the storm dies in the storm.

Taoism · Zhuangzi

The mind is like water. Stirred, it shows you nothing true. Still, it shows you everything exactly as it is, and only then is it worth deciding anything.
