Genesis 12:12 Meaning It Will Happen

It will happen, when the Egyptians see you, that they will say, ‘This is his wife.’ They will kill me, but they will save you alive.

What does Genesis 12:12 mean?

This is the ego rehearsing catastrophe, certain that being truly seen means being destroyed. A mind gripped by fear looks ahead and populates the future with attackers, convinced that others will take what it loves and turn on it.

Christian Psychology

This is the ego rehearsing catastrophe, certain that being truly seen means being destroyed. A mind gripped by fear looks ahead and populates the future with attackers, convinced that others will take what it loves and turn on it. The threat is not out in the strangers; it is guilt projected forward and dressed as their intent.

The wife stands for the part of the mind that has been loved and known, and fear insists this treasure makes the self a target. What looks like foreign danger is the mind's own belief in punishment thrown outside and given a face. The Egyptians only appear to menace because a frightened mind has decided in advance that it will be harmed.

Egyptians: the imagined attackers the fearful mind projects, faces given to its own expectation of punishment Wife: the loved and known part of the mind, the treasure fear believes will make the self a target

  1. When you catch yourself rehearsing a bad conversation that has not happened, say to yourself: this is a story, not news. Then go do the next real thing in front of you.
  2. With someone you are braced against, say the true small thing instead of the managed version. Being seen is usually safer than you predicted.
  3. Before a review or a hard call, write down the worst thing you expect. Seeing it in plain words usually shrinks it to its real size.

What am I defending against that has not actually happened?

We suffer more in imagination than in reality. Most of what we dread arrives smaller, or never arrives at all.
