Genesis 12:13 Meaning Please Say That You Are My Sister

Please say that you are my sister, that it may be well with me for your sake, and that my soul may live because of you.

What does Genesis 12:13 mean?

Fear speaks here, dressing survival in the language of love. A mind convinced it stands alone in a foreign land believes its safety must be bought, and so it hides the truth and asks another to carry its protection.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

Fear speaks here, dressing survival in the language of love. A mind convinced it stands alone in a foreign land believes its safety must be bought, and so it hides the truth and asks another to carry its protection. This is how the ego always works: it treats a companion as a shield against an outside threat, when the only threat is the guilt it drags along, projected onto strangers who seem to menace from without.

The sister who is really the wife is the whole of the mind split into halves, one part offered up so the other might survive. Nothing outside needs managing. The moment fear is set down and love is chosen as teacher, the imagined danger dissolves, and the mind discovers it was never in peril at all.

Sister: the disowned half of the mind, the truth relabeled to seem safe, love reduced to a useful fiction Wife: the mind's own wholeness, the joined self that fear pretends is only a stranger Land: the world seen as foreign and threatening, the projected screen onto which guilt casts its enemies

Under pressure the higher self hides the soul's true rank and calls her only sister when she is wife, veiling the deepest union to survive in a hostile lower region. Sarai is the soul, the feminine principle wedded to the aspiring spirit; to name her sister is to demote that inner marriage to mere kinship so the coarser powers do not seize it. The confession that his soul shall live because of her states the plain law: the spirit endures only through the soul it will not fully claim in Egypt.

Egypt, unspoken but pressing all around, is the body and its bondage, the dense material state where truth must go disguised.

Sarai (thou, the sister/wife): the soul wedded to the spirit, her true rank hidden and demoted under threat to mere kinship Egypt (the surrounding land): the body and its bondage, the dense material state where the soul must travel disguised

Live Genesis 12:13 today

  1. When your chest tightens over something you are dreading, sit with your phone face down for a minute and ask what you are actually protecting. Most of the time the danger is a conversation you have not had yet.
  2. With one person today, say the true thing you were going to soften. A small honesty you were tempted to trade away for safety.
  3. In a meeting or a tense thread, resist the urge to put someone else in front of you, to let a colleague take the hit or carry your position for you. Speak for yourself and let it be a little uncomfortable.

What am I hiding right now because I believe the truth would cost me too much?

Tao Te Ching

The one who grasps at safety loses it. Holding life too tightly is the surest way to squeeze it out of shape.

Stoicism · Epictetus

We are not disturbed by events but by the fearful stories we tell about them. The threat you brace against is usually a picture in your own mind.

Buddhism · Dhammapada

Fear is born of craving and clinging. Set down the clinging and there is nothing left for fear to stand on.
