Genesis 2:17 Meaning But You Shall Not Eat
but you shall not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; for in the day that you eat of it, you will surely die.

Genesis 2:17 · World English Bible
but you shall not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil; for in the day that you eat of it, you will surely die.
This single limit is an act of love, not a trap. The Church reads the forbidden tree as God protecting people from grasping a knowledge they were not ready to carry, the kind that seizes good and evil for itself instead of receiving them from Him.

ORTHODOX
This single limit is an act of love, not a trap. The Church reads the forbidden tree as God protecting people from grasping a knowledge they were not ready to carry, the kind that seizes good and evil for itself instead of receiving them from Him. To reach past that boundary was to reach past trust.
The death warned of here is not only the body's end but the soul pulling away from the God who is its life. In plain words: God gave one boundary to keep His children safe, and stepping over it cut them off from the source of life, which is what real death is.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY
The warning is not a threat from an angry God but a plain description of what judgment does to a mind. To take up the knowing of good and evil is to begin comparing, condemning, and dividing, and that habit is itself the death being spoken of, for the sense of separation is the only death a mind can suffer. Nothing is being punished; a consequence is simply being named.
The day a mind chooses to judge is the day it feels cut off, exiled, alone, for judgment builds the very wall of separation the ego calls the self. The death is not the end of life but the forgetting of it, the eclipse of the awareness that all is one. To eat of judgment is to fall asleep to what you are, and to lay it down is to wake.
Tree of the knowledge of good and evil: the act of judgment itself, the ego's dividing of the world into opposites that severs a mind from its own wholeness.

MANIFESTATION
The death here is not the end of a body but a sleep of forgetting. God pours himself wholly into human form and forgets he is the source, and that forgetting is the death the warning names. To eat of this tree is to begin judging by good and evil, by what the outer world shows, and the moment awareness accepts appearances as the last word it falls asleep to its own power. The tree is not out in a garden. It is the habit of measuring life by what seems good or bad instead of by the inner feeling a person takes on.
Disbelief in your own I AM, in the awareness of being that is the only creative power, is the one sin the story is built around. A person who takes on the inner feeling of already having what he wants is awake. A person who reads his outer condition and calls it the truth has eaten, and has died into his own dream. Waking from that sleep is remembering that the world answers to what is assumed within.

ESOTERIC
The tree of the knowledge of good and evil is the dividing mind, the faculty that splits every whole into this against that. To eat of it is to enter comparison and opposition, to begin judging one thing over another and living inside the war of pairs.
The death that follows is not the ending of the body but the falling asleep of unified awareness. On the day a person takes up the dualistic mind, the single seamless seeing goes dark, and the one who lived in wholeness now lives divided, which is what it means here to surely die.
Tree of the knowledge of good and evil: the dividing, judging mind that splits every whole into opposed pairs and sets one against the other Fruit, eating: taking the dualistic mind into oneself, entering comparison and opposition and making the split one's own

PSYCHOANALYSIS
A sealed body keeps its secret; it must be opened before what lives inside can show itself. Here the opening releases two things: blood, which stands for the flesh and its passions, and water, which stands for the spirit that cools and cleanses. Normally the two are kept apart.
His pierced side recalls how the first man's side was opened to form his companion, so the wound is a birth. Both fluids come from one source, and that is the meaning: here the bodily and the spiritual are not enemies but flow from the same place and make one whole.

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY
The forbidden tree is moral awareness itself. To eat of it is to wake into the knowledge of good and evil, and with that knowledge comes the recognition of one's own limits, one's own vulnerability, one's own end. The warning is not arbitrary. On the day a creature can weigh good against evil, it also knows that it will die, because the two awarenesses arrive together.
The deeper sin is not the bite but the pride behind it. A limited creature reaches to become like God and refuses the boundary set for it. That refusal is the first lie, the choice of a false infinity over an honest finitude. A child raised well grows curious enough to go looking for exactly this trouble. That is built into being conscious. Growing up means learning to carry the knowledge without pretending you are more than mortal.
Orthodox lens
What am I trying to get hold of that I was only ever meant to be given?
Knowing when enough is enough is called true wealth, and grasping past it is called loss. The reach itself is the poverty.
Craving is named as the root of suffering: the pull to seize what would be fine if received and ruinous if grabbed. The hand that will not stay open is already in pain.
Epictetus taught his students to want only what is theirs to have, because reaching for what is not yours is how you lose your freedom. The limit is not a cage, it is where peace lives.
