MANIFESTATION

Manifestation

Creation happens in a state close to sleep, where ordinary striving stops and the mind grows quiet and receptive. The deep sleep is that inward stillness in which a wish is accepted without argument. What gets drawn out is not a bone but a companion, the very thing the heart was missing.

To take the rib and close the flesh is to lift a desire out of the self and give it a shape that feels near and alive. Nothing enters from outside. Every partner, every answer, is fashioned from within and then met in the world. The state a person settles into becomes the life he wakes to.

ESOTERIC

Esoteric

The deep sleep is a descent, the fall of full awareness into the drowse of ordinary living, where a person forgets what he is and moves half-conscious. In that drowse the undivided self is quietly split in 2. The Hebrew for rib is also the word for side, so what is drawn out of the earth-formed man is not 1 small bone but a whole half of the being, set apart so it can stand facing him and be met. The wound closes over and the division feels natural, because the deepest changes in a person are made below waking notice, in the part of the mind that never sees itself.

Deep sleep: the descent of clear awareness into the drowse of daily living, where a person acts without truly seeing himself Rib: the side of the being, a whole half drawn out and set apart so it can be encountered as if it were other Adam: the red clay of the earth-formed self, the ground-being shaped from the same dust it walks upon

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

Clinical Psychology

The feminine is drawn out of the depths of the man while he lies unconscious, and this is a claim about origin, not a charter for subordination. Something is differentiated here from an undivided whole, brought up out of the sleeping darkness where a person cannot reach by will. She comes from the side, taken from near the heart, neither above him to rule nor beneath him to be trodden.

Read carelessly, this becomes a story of patriarchy, woman as afterthought. Read properly, it says the opposite. Personhood is the product of the Logos, the ordering word that speaks form out of the deep, and Eve is that word made manifest. She is the equal of Adam in every manner, complementary and not identical. Man and woman are two expressions of one dignity.

Live Genesis 2:21 today

  1. Tonight, in the few minutes before you fall asleep, stay with one gentle scene of the thing you want already being true. No arguing with it, no planning. Just rest there until you drift off.
  2. The next time someone is quiet with you, leave the silence alone. Let the pause finish instead of filling it, and see what they say next.
  3. When you are stuck on a problem at work, close the laptop for ten minutes and do nothing demanding. Walk, look out a window. Solutions tend to show up in the gap, not in the grinding.

What might arrive if I stopped pushing for it long enough to be quiet?

Return to stillness and things settle into their own order. Striving stirs the water. Quiet lets it clear.

Tao Te Ching 11

A bowl is useful because of the space inside it. What looks like nothing is the part that actually holds something.
