Genesis 22:3 Meaning Abraham Rose Early in the Morning

Abraham rose early in the morning, and saddled his donkey; and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son. He split the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went to the place of which God had told him.

What does Genesis 22:3 mean?

The whole preparation is one movement of consciousness readying itself for a surrender of the lower self. The ass is the animal body, the beast of burden that carries a person's weight, and saddling it means bringing the flesh under command so it can be directed rather than obeyed.

The whole preparation is one movement of consciousness readying itself for a surrender of the lower self. The ass is the animal body, the beast of burden that carries a person's weight, and saddling it means bringing the flesh under command so it can be directed rather than obeyed. The 2 young men are the pair of lower faculties that go partway and then wait behind, since the highest work is done past the point where the ordinary powers can follow. Isaac, whose name holds laughter, is the beloved inner joy, the very thing a person is asked to lay down. The wood is split and carried because the fuel of the offering, the dense material substance, must be prepared by the one making it.

Rising early in the morning is awareness waking before the noise of the day, moving in the fresh light toward the appointed place, the raised center in the head where the offering is made. This is a person setting out, fully deliberate, to give up the dearest thing the lower life has produced.

Ass: the animal body, the beast of burden that carries a person's weight until it is brought under command. 2 young men: the pair of lower faculties that accompany the work partway and wait behind where they cannot follow. Isaac: the beloved inner joy and laughter, the dearest fruit of the self that is brought to be surrendered. Wood for the burnt offering: the dense material fuel that must be split and carried before the lower self can be given up. The place: the raised center in the head, the appointed high point where the offering is made.

SELF-HELP

Self-Help

A decision becomes real the moment you start work that only makes sense if you go through with it.

Hands busy with rope and wood cannot be used by the part of the mind that argues. A man who finishes the preparing before the doubting gets a vote is running his own state on purpose: motion produces the emotion, the emotion holds the decision steady, and the decision outlasts three days of road.

Cutting the wood is preparing the instrument of the thing he dreads, and a person moves toward pain like that only when something outranks their own comfort; what God had said outranked it. Anyone who waits to feel settled before saddling anything ends up with obedience they intend and a life that never shows a trace of it.

Live Genesis 22:3 today

  1. Get up at your alarm tomorrow and spend the first ten minutes with no screen. Just you and the quiet before the day starts talking.
  2. Do the unglamorous prep that makes someone else's day work, pack the lunch, fill the tank, wash the dishes before anyone asks. Carry the wood without pointing at it.
  3. When a hard conversation is coming, do not wing it. Take five minutes beforehand to get clear on what matters, then walk in steady instead of reacting.

What have I been putting off because the quiet preparation feels like it does not count?

Before enlightenment, chop wood and carry water. After enlightenment, chop wood and carry water. The preparing is not a detour from the thing, it is the thing.
