Genesis 22:4 Meaning On the Third Day Abraham Lifted Up

On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place far off.

What does Genesis 22:4 mean?

The struggling self, breath rising toward God, comes at last into new spiritual awakening, and the lifting of the eyes is that awakening opening. The number 3 is the mark of resurrection and new life, the winter-solstice sun turning up out of its lowest days; on that day, and not before, the inner sight clears enough to make out where it is going.

Esoteric

The struggling self, breath rising toward God, comes at last into new spiritual awakening, and the lifting of the eyes is that awakening opening. The number 3 is the mark of resurrection and new life, the winter-solstice sun turning up out of its lowest days; on that day, and not before, the inner sight clears enough to make out where it is going. The place seen far off is a higher state of consciousness glimpsed before it is reached, held in view across the distance the climb still has to cover.

The eyes were down through the first 2 days of the ascent. On the third the sun turns, the vision opens, and the goal stands visible ahead though the ground to it is not yet walked.

Third day: the solstice interval of resurrection and new life, when the low sun turns and inner sight clears. Place afar off: the higher state of consciousness seen from a distance before it is reached.

Live Genesis 22:4 today

  1. If you are in a long stretch of nothing changing, write down one line about where you are headed and put it where you will see it. Then do today's small piece.
  2. Tell one person the thing you are working toward, even if it is far off and you feel silly saying it out loud. Saying it keeps it in view.
  3. On the day when the work feels pointless, lift your eyes off the task for a minute and remember what it is for. Then put your head back down and keep going.

What have I stopped looking up at because it still seems too far away?

The thousand-mile journey begins under your feet, and the far place is reached by whoever keeps taking the next step toward it.

Buddhism

The teaching is a raft, not a shore. Seeing the far bank is not the crossing, but it is what keeps you paddling.

The old reading of winter is that the light turns at its lowest point. The change begins while everything still looks dark.
