Genesis 22:5 Meaning Abraham Said to His Young Men

Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey. The boy and I will go over there. We will worship, and come back to you.”

What does Genesis 22:5 mean?

The mind that means to look on its darkest fear must leave the body's demands behind, letting the beast of appetite and the servants of habit wait below while the higher part goes up alone. What is heavy and untrained cannot climb; only the willing self and the innocence it carries can approach the place of decision.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

The mind that means to look on its darkest fear must leave the body's demands behind, letting the beast of appetite and the servants of habit wait below while the higher part goes up alone. What is heavy and untrained cannot climb; only the willing self and the innocence it carries can approach the place of decision. Worship here is simply the turning of attention toward truth.

And already the promise of return is spoken, for the mind that ascends to face its fear was never going to lose anything. It will come again with all it brought, unharmed.

Young men: the lesser servants of the mind, its habits and helpers that cannot make the ascent. Ass: the body with its burdens and appetites, left behind at the foot of the climb. Lad: the innocent self the mind carries upward, the part still untouched by guilt.

Live Genesis 22:5 today

  1. Leave your phone in another room for twenty minutes today and sit with whatever comes up. The restlessness in the first five minutes is the part you are leaving at the foot of the hill.
  2. When you sit down with someone over dinner or coffee, put the screen face down and out of reach. Give them the version of you that has nothing else pulling at it.
  3. Before a hard conversation or a meeting you are dreading, take two slow breaths in the hallway and let the stories go quiet. Walk in carrying only what is actually needed.

What am I dragging up the hill with me that could simply wait at the bottom?

The same truth in other traditions

Buddhism

The mind cannot settle while it is still being pulled by every appetite. Set those down at the edge, and the quiet opens on its own.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

You can withdraw into yourself at any hour, and it asks nothing but the leaving behind of noise. That retreat is always available and always nearby.

Tao Te Ching

Empty yourself of the clutter and the clear thing arrives without being chased. What is heavy stays at the bottom of the hill.
