What a person does past the point of what was asked is the only reliable read on who they are. A request marks the floor.

The same verse, read by one tradition.

SELF-HELP
What a person does past the point of what was asked is the only reliable read on who they are.
A request marks the floor. What someone adds above it comes from a standard installed by a thousand unwatched repetitions, which is why exertion reads truer than speech. Ten camels after a desert march drink far more than courtesy would cover, and nobody merely being agreeable starts that many trips to the well.
The sign prayed for could only be produced by labor, because God answers through character built long before the test arrives. A person who quietly negotiates their standard down to whatever was asked stays honest, useful, and overlooked in the hour that would have changed their life.
Self-Help lens
Where have I quietly lowered what I give to exactly what was asked?
Marcus wrote that the soul takes on the color of its habitual thoughts, so what a man rehearses in private is what he becomes in public. The habit built unwatched is what appears under test.
Confucius said the superior man is modest in speech and exceeds in action. The gap between the two is where a person's real standard sits.
Generosity in Buddhist teaching is measured by the giving that goes past obligation. What is given freely, beyond what anyone required, is what forms the giver.
