Genesis 26:1 · World English Bible

Genesis 26:1 Meaning There Was a Famine in the Land

There was a famine in the land, in addition to the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. Isaac went to Abimelech king of the Philistines, to Gerar.

What does Genesis 26:1 mean?

Scarcity is the first lie the ego tells, the sense that there is not enough and that the mind must go elsewhere to be fed. Lack repeats itself, generation after generation, until the mind assumes emptiness is simply how things are, and travels toward a foreign king certain that supply lives anywhere but within.

Scarcity is the first lie the ego tells, the sense that there is not enough and that the mind must go elsewhere to be fed. Lack repeats itself, generation after generation, until the mind assumes emptiness is simply how things are, and travels toward a foreign king certain that supply lives anywhere but within.

Yet the want is only a decision to see nothing where fullness already is. The mind that feels starved has turned from the one Source that was never absent. What it seeks abroad it carries with it, and the journey outward changes only where the body stands.

Famine: the belief in lack that convinces the mind there is not enough, the emptiness projected onto a world Land: the field of experience the mind believes it must feed from, which reflects back only what the mind first decided to see Abimelech: the outer authority the mind runs toward when it forgets its supply lies within Gerar: the foreign ground of the ego, the elsewhere the mind flees to in search of what it never left

Live Genesis 26:1 today

  1. When you open a new tab or app looking for something and you cannot say what, close it and sit still for thirty seconds. The restlessness usually has nothing to do with the screen.
  2. Instead of scanning what someone else has, their job, their home, their life as it appears online, say one specific thing you are glad about in your own. Out loud, even if nobody hears it.
  3. In a tight month or a tense week, before you go looking outward for a rescue, make a list of what is actually here. Then decide what you really need, from a calmer place.

Where have I been looking for something I brought with me?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching 46

Wanting is the famine. The one who knows they have enough is already full, no matter what the storehouse says.

Buddhism

The hungry spirit has a throat too narrow to swallow and a belly that never fills. It is not a punishment, it is a description of wanting itself.

Sufism

You have been searching door to door for the thing you carry. The journey only moved your feet, never the treasure.
