Genesis 28:11 Meaning He Came to a Certain Place

He came to a certain place, and stayed there all night, because the sun had set. He took one of the stones of the place, and put it under his head, and lay down in that place to sleep.

What does Genesis 28:11 mean?

A mind that has been running from its brother finally stops in the dark, lays its head on stone, and sleeps, and this is the whole condition of the separated self, at rest on hardness in a world where the light has gone out. Sleep is the dream of separation itself, entered where fear has driven the self to the end of the day.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

A mind that has been running from its brother finally stops in the dark, lays its head on stone, and sleeps, and this is the whole condition of the separated self, at rest on hardness in a world where the light has gone out. Sleep is the dream of separation itself, entered where fear has driven the self to the end of the day.

Yet even here, in the hardest place a mind has found, it is only sleeping, and what sleeps can wake. The comfort is exact and quiet, that the darkness and the stone are features of a dream, and the self laid down in them was never truly harmed and has only to open its eyes.

Stones: the hardness the self rests upon in its exile, the unyielding beliefs it has made into a place to lie down. Sun: the awareness of love, whose setting leaves the mind in the darkness where the dream of separation takes hold.

MANIFESTATION

Manifestation

The stone Jacob lays his head upon is his own skull, and the whole scene happens whenever a person turns inward to sleep with a wish. When the sun sets and the outer light of the senses goes dark, the reasoning that measures what is possible finally rests. The deeper power in a person is then free to act. He does not build with the stone. He lies down on it, gives up the world of fact, and sleeps.

The skull is the resting place where the higher meets the lower, and sleep is the door. The person who quiets the senses and drops into the feeling of the thing already done has laid his head on the one stone that matters. What he assumes there, in the dark, with the outer light gone, is what he wakes to live from.

ESOTERIC

Esoteric

The stone set beneath the head is the pineal gland, the stone the builders rejected, and laying the head upon it draws awareness down to that light-receptor at the center of the brain. The sun setting is the solar-plexus energy sinking as the outward day of the senses closes, and in that dark the inner scene can open.

With the head resting on the pineal stone, the ground is laid for the ladder that follows: the spine and the spinal fluid, the pineal-DNA pathway up which energy rises to consciousness. What happens in a person is that the outer light lowers, the head comes to rest on the inner stone, and the climb of the spine toward higher awareness becomes possible.

Live Genesis 28:11 today

  1. Tonight, when you lie down at the end of a hard day, do not fix anything first. Let the day be as rough as it was and go to sleep anyway, trusting that the version of you waking up is not broken.
  2. If someone near you is at the end of their rope, do not try to lift them out of it. Sit with them in the hard place and let your staying be the whole message.
  3. On a bad commute home, when everything feels heavy and shut down, remind yourself that the heaviness is weather and not the ground. You are passing through it, not living in it.

When things feel hardest, what in me is actually unhurt?

Hinduism · Mandukya Upanishad

The self passes through waking and dream and deep sleep and is untouched by all three. What watches the dream is never inside it.

Taoism · Zhuangzi

He dreamed he was a butterfly and woke unsure which was which. The question itself loosens the grip of the dream.

Zen · Dogen

Awakening does not destroy the dream the way a fist breaks a cup. It is the dream recognized, and nothing in you was ever broken by it.
