A mind asleep beside the road, fleeing its own guilt, is shown what has always been true beneath the dream. The distance it feels between earth and heaven is not real, for the two are joined and the traffic between them never stops. Every thought of love the mind sends upward is answered, and every answer descends again into the very place where it lies dreaming.

What looks like exile is only a mind that forgot the connection was already made. It need climb nothing. The way home was set down where it stands, and the correction it fears it must earn is already moving toward it while it sleeps.

Nothing here is outside him. Heaven and earth are the two ends of one being, and the traffic between them runs up and down inside a single sleeping form.

The angels moving both ways are ideas, the impressions carried up from what a person quietly assumes and the answering changes sent back down into his circumstances. When a person persuades himself inwardly that the thing he wants is already so, the outer world reshapes itself to match that conviction. This is the whole machinery of the dream: a person accepts a state within, and the world without arranges itself around what he has accepted. The ascent to what he calls God is made on the pillow of his own head.

Set within a person is a standing channel that joins the body to the highest mind. Its foot rests on the earth of the flesh and its top opens at the crown, and along it the energies of consciousness move both ways, rising toward the light and returning into the body carrying what they gained. This is the spinal path, the inner ladder that runs up the back to the head, seen in the sleeping state when the surface self is quiet enough to perceive it.

The messengers going up and coming down are the currents of awareness climbing the column and descending again. The dream shows what is always there in the body, the road between earth and heaven set inside a single person.

The traffic runs both ways. What is high reaches down into ordinary life, and what stands on the earth can rise. The dream gives him an image of wholeness at the moment he feels most alone, telling him the two halves of his world are connected and always have been.

A man flees his home a liar, sleeps on a stone, and still the vertical axis of the world opens above him. The ladder is the hierarchy of Being made visible. Reality is layered, and above the dirt where a man lies rises height, and above that, more height. Even a fugitive stands somewhere on that scale, with a place to climb toward.

Traffic moves both ways on it. What is highest reaches down into the ordinary, and the ordinary can rise. No one is trapped on the ground floor of his own life. Wherever a person wakes, however low, a way upward is already set beside him, and the climb begins with the next honest step.
