Genesis 28:18 · World English Bible

Genesis 28:18 Meaning Jacob Rose Up Early in the Morning

Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put under his head, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil on its top.

What does Genesis 28:18 mean?

The stone raised at dawn is the awakened center of the body set upright, the fixed point of consciousness made into a standing pillar. What served as a pillow, the resting place of the sleeping head, becomes the axis on which the higher life now turns, the dreamer's support lifted into a monument of spirit.

The stone raised at dawn is the awakened center of the body set upright, the fixed point of consciousness made into a standing pillar. What served as a pillow, the resting place of the sleeping head, becomes the axis on which the higher life now turns, the dreamer's support lifted into a monument of spirit.

Oil poured on its top is the anointing current, the fine energy that runs up the spine and crowns the raised center with light. What lay flat beneath sleep now rises consecrated within the waking man.

The stone: the fixed center of consciousness, set upright as the standing axis of the inner life The pillar: the awakened column of the body, the spine made into a monument of spirit Oil: the anointing current, the fine energy that ascends the spine and crowns the raised center with light

SELF-HELP

Self-Help

A commitment that stays inside a person is a commitment their calmer self is free to overrule.

Emotion fades fast, and a mind returning to ordinary temperature starts revising the night downward until what God said becomes a strange dream a man once had.

Standing that stone up and pouring oil over it puts the commitment outside him, where it can no longer be quietly downgraded. The oil is the point: a commitment that costs nothing to make is one a person feels free to forget. Leave the site of a vision without an act and a lifetime fills up with encounters with God that changed nothing, each one remembered warmly and none of them binding.

Live Genesis 28:18 today

  1. Before the phone tomorrow, stand up, feet on the floor, and take one full breath. One honest minute at the start sets the angle of the whole day.
  2. Tell one person something you are actually committing to, out loud, in plain words. Said to a face, a private intention becomes something that stands up on its own.
  3. When the day starts going sideways, stop and physically stand up for thirty seconds. Changing your posture changes which part of you is answering.

What have I been resting my head on for years without ever standing it upright?

The same truth in other traditions

Hinduism · Katha Upanishad

Arise, awake, and learn from the wise. The call is to get up at once, because the knowledge waits on the one who stands rather than the one who stays lying down.

Zen

Before awakening, carry water and chop wood. After awakening, carry water and chop wood. The same act, now upright and lit from inside.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

Begin at first light, and begin standing. Marcus pulls himself out of bed to set his ruling mind upright before the day has a chance to set it for him.
