Genesis 3:22 Meaning Yahweh God Said

Yahweh God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand, and also take of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever—”

What does Genesis 3:22 mean?

To know good and evil is to live split down the middle, forever weighing this against that, forever a step removed from the thing in front of you. The judging mind cannot rest.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

To know good and evil is to live split down the middle, forever weighing this against that, forever a step removed from the thing in front of you. The judging mind cannot rest. Every verdict it reaches leaves one half of the world unwanted.

So the life that never dies is set apart from the hand that grasps. What grasps is the restless, dividing part of a person, and it cannot hold what is whole. The tree of life is not withheld out of spite. It simply cannot be seized by the very faculty that broke the world into halves. Grasping and being fully alive turn out to move in opposite directions.

MANIFESTATION

Manifestation

The man has become as one of the gods because he has taken up the creative power itself, the knowledge of good and evil being the power to assume any state and feel it as his own. This is no fall into shame. It is imagination descending into flesh to gather experience, and the serpent that led it there spoke the truth, for the serpent is that same creative wisdom, eternal life coiled in man. Adam and Christ are one being passing through the descent.

The tree of life is the awareness that a person can imagine himself into any condition and live from it forever. To keep the man from it for a season is part of the plan, not a punishment, so the descent may run its full course before it turns and rises. A man is not cast out for reaching too high. He is held back only until the power he has taken up is ready to bring him home.

ESOTERIC

Esoteric

The man has crossed into the split awareness of good and evil, the divided consciousness that names things opposite and so loses the single vision it held before. Now stands a second tree, the tree of life, the inner spinal column and its rising current that carries the power of undying awareness. The hand put forth is the reach of the lower, divided self toward that high tree while still unripe. The barring is not cruelty but timing: the immortal current cannot be seized by a consciousness still caught in the war of opposites, so the way to it is held until the self is ready.

Once a person falls into divided, either-or thinking, the current of undying life within is kept out of reach until that inner division is healed.

The tree of life: the inner spinal column and its rising current, the channel of undying awareness in the body The hand put forth: the reach of the lower divided self toward the high inner power while still unready To know good and evil: the split, opposite-naming awareness that has lost its single vision

PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

Once a person can tell good from evil, he has crossed into something larger than himself. Knowing the two opposites is exactly what makes a creature conscious, and it lifts him close to the level of his maker. But this new power comes with a limit around it.

He is not allowed to also seize endless life and become a god outright. A boundary is drawn between knowing and having everything. Waking up to the difference between good and evil is a real kind of greatness, but it arrives together with knowing that he will die. A person cannot gain this awareness and also live forever, and having to die is the price of becoming fully conscious.

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

Clinical Psychology

To know good and evil is to become terribly like a god and terribly unlike an animal, burdened with a moral sight no beast carries. A creature that can weigh what ought to be against what is has crossed a threshold it cannot uncross. Knowledge of this kind is a wound that never closes.

Mortality is the mercy hidden in the sentence. A being who knows evil and also cannot die would become a monster past all correction, its errors compounding without end. Death sets a limit on how wrong a person can go. The gate closes so that suffering will not last forever, and that closing is a gift.

Live Genesis 3:22 today

  1. When you next catch yourself sorting your own day into good parts and bad parts, stop the tally for a minute and just let the day be the day. The scorekeeping is not helping you live it.
  2. Let someone finish a story without ranking it in your head as interesting or boring. Just be there with them while they talk, and see how different the conversation feels.
  3. In the moment you most want to grab control, a decision slipping away, a reply you need to send right now, unclench your hands and breathe once before you move. What you most want usually cannot be seized anyway.

What are you holding so tightly that you can no longer feel it?

Tao Te Ching

The sage holds nothing and so lacks nothing. The hand that closes around a thing is the hand that can no longer receive.

Zen

A cup already full of your opinions has no room for the tea being poured. Emptiness is not poverty, it is the condition for being filled.

Bhagavad Gita

Act without clutching at the fruit of the action. The grasping is what binds, not the doing.
