What does Genesis 3:23 mean?

Expulsion from paradise reads like pure punishment until one notices the assignment attached to it. Sent out, yes, but sent to work, to till the ground he was drawn from, to bend his effort against a world that no longer yields without labor.

Expulsion from paradise reads like pure punishment until one notices the assignment attached to it. Sent out, yes, but sent to work, to till the ground he was drawn from, to bend his effort against a world that no longer yields without labor. Cosmic cruelty has nothing to do with it. This describes the condition of a self-conscious creature who now sees the gap between how things are and how they could be, and who must sweat to close it.

Hardship is not the accident of a broken world; it is the arena in which a person becomes capable. The one cast into the field is handed responsibility precisely where paradise has been withdrawn, and opportunity lurks exactly where responsibility has been abdicated. Life outside the garden asks for humility and sustained effort. Labor against the resistant earth does not oppose a meaningful life. That labor is what makes one.

  1. Pick the one thing you have been scrolling past all week, the form, the call, the box in the garage, and give it twenty honest minutes with your phone face down. The resistance you feel is the work itself, not a sign you chose wrong.
  2. When someone at home or at work says something is hard, resist the urge to fix it or to say it will be fine. Ask what the next small piece of it looks like, and offer to carry that piece with them.
  3. In the middle of a day that is going badly, the delayed train, the meeting that runs long, the error message again, say to yourself that this is the ground you were given to till. Then do the next concrete thing in front of you instead of arguing with the day.

What have you been waiting to be easy before you would start it?

The sage does not stand apart from the work of the world but moves with it, shaping the clay, carving the wood. The useful thing comes into being only through hands that labor on resistant material.

What stands in the way becomes the way. The obstacle in front of you is not an interruption of your life, it is the material your character is made from.

You are not required to finish the work, but neither are you free to walk away from it. The task is given to you precisely because it is unfinished.
