The spirit gathers itself and turns inward after the outer arrangement has run its course. Jacob is that spirit, and the sons are the thoughts begotten by anointed meditation, the good thinking born of stillness rather than the world's noise. Setting them upon camels is the deciding image, for the camel is the power to live on inner water, to cross the dry stretch on a reserve carried within. The spirit loads its true offspring onto that capacity and moves.

The whole scene is awareness preparing for the inward journey, placing what it values most on the one faculty that can carry it through drought. Meditation is that camel, the well drawn on inside when nothing outside supplies the way.

Jacob: the spirit in a person, gathering itself to turn inward Sons: the thoughts begotten by anointed meditation, the good thinking born of stillness Wives: the spiritual parts of the spirit, the inner companions it carries with it Camels: the power to live on inner water, the faculty that crosses the dry stretch on a reserve carried within

Live Genesis 31:17 today

  1. Before the day starts pulling, sit for five minutes with nothing in your hands. That is the water you will drink from later when the day goes dry.
  2. Go into one hard conversation today already full, not waiting for the other person to top you up. You will be kinder because you are not thirsty.
  3. When the pressure hits and nothing outside is giving you anything, breathe once and draw on the still place you filled this morning. That is what it was for.

What are you carrying inside that could get you through a dry stretch, if you trusted it?
