Genesis 32:11 · World English Bible

Genesis 32:11 Meaning Please Deliver Me From the Hand

Please deliver me from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau; for I fear him, lest he come and strike me and the mothers with the children.

What does Genesis 32:11 mean?

A mind begs to be saved from its brother's hand, not seeing that the hand it dreads is the reflection of its own. Guilt cannot picture a brother reaching out to bless; it sees only a blow coming, and it pleads for rescue from a danger it invented.

A mind begs to be saved from its brother's hand, not seeing that the hand it dreads is the reflection of its own. Guilt cannot picture a brother reaching out to bless; it sees only a blow coming, and it pleads for rescue from a danger it invented. The mother and the children are all the tender and defenseless parts of the self the mind fears to lose, and it imagines them destroyed because it has secretly judged itself worthy of that loss.

Deliverance was never needed from the brother, who comes in peace. What such a mind truly asks to be freed from is the guilt that dresses love as a threat, and that release comes the instant the brother is seen as innocent.

Hand of my brother: the reach of the one feared as an attacker, in truth the mirror of the mind's own guilt turned back on itself Esau: the innocent brother the guilty mind cannot yet meet without terror The mother with the children: the tender, defenseless parts of the self the mind dreads to lose, condemned by its own hidden verdict

A man can hold two certainties at once, and the one he pictures in detail is the one his body believes.

Dread does its damage by being specific: naming the blow, the mothers, the children converts an unknown into a rehearsed event, and rehearsal produces the chemistry of the event itself, which sets the state, and a man in that state negotiates from weakness while still holding a promise from God.

The plea proves the wiring is intact. Asking for deliverance is total belief that deliverance exists, held in the same breath as total belief in a slaughter, both unseen, and only one of them given texture. Give the promise the vividness currently spent on the massacre and the state changes before the circumstance does. A man who does not redirect it walks into the reconciliation he prayed for still braced for the blow, and the bracing shapes how he speaks in it.

Live Genesis 32:11 today

  1. Name the worst thing you believe someone is about to do to you, then ask yourself honestly what evidence you actually have. Usually it is a tone, not a fact.
  2. Approach the person you feel most defensive around today with no guard up. Greet them first. See whether the threat was in them or in you.
  3. When a message or a reply makes your chest tighten, read it once more assuming the person meant you no harm. Then answer that version.

What am I afraid someone will do to me that I may have quietly decided I deserve?

It is not things that disturb us but our judgments about them. The hand you fear is lifted by your opinion of it.

All that we are arises with our thoughts. What you fear in the world was first assembled in the mind that fears it.
