Genesis 32:10 · World English Bible

Genesis 32:10 Meaning I Am Not Worthy of the Least

I am not worthy of the least of all the loving kindnesses, and of all the truth, which you have shown to your servant; for with just my staff I crossed over this Jordan; and now I have become two companies.

What does Genesis 32:10 mean?

A mind confessing it is unworthy of the least mercy has looked honestly at how little it brought and how much was given, and this is not despair but the first clear sight that all it has was received and none of it earned. The single staff it once carried and the two companies it has become measure a grace that grew while the mind was asleep to its own smallness.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

A mind confessing it is unworthy of the least mercy has looked honestly at how little it brought and how much was given, and this is not despair but the first clear sight that all it has was received and none of it earned. The single staff it once carried and the two companies it has become measure a grace that grew while the mind was asleep to its own smallness.

What looks like weakness in a mind that owns it has nothing of its own becomes the doorway through which everything is quietly supplied. The moment it stops claiming to deserve, it is free to receive.

Staff: the one bare support a mind leans on when it has nothing else, the emptiness it crossed over with before grace filled its hands. Jordan: the boundary a mind passes through between having nothing and being given all, the crossing where lack becomes abundance. Two bands: the increase a mind wakes to find already granted, the plenty that grew while it thought itself alone and poor.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

He remembers the man who crossed the river with one stick in his hand and nothing else, and he sets that beside the crowds and herds he leads now. The distance empties him. He counts himself unworthy of the least of it.

Here the ego thins until it can barely be found. When a person stops taking the credit and simply sees how much arrived unearned, the sense of a proud, separate self quietly dissolves. What remains is gratitude, standing where the boasting used to be.

ESOTERIC

Esoteric

One seed sets out with nothing and is granted increase along the way, and that growth is the mercy a person confesses when returning toward spirit. The staff is the spine, the single upright line of force a person crosses over on, and with only that a person passed the dividing river and came into abundance. Jordan is the descending water that separates the far country from home, the boundary a person must cross going down before turning back and up. What left as a lone traveler with one support has multiplied into 2 bands, the many powers grown from a single beginning, and the returning self stands humbled that so much came from so little. This is the growth given on the road back to the father, not earned by scheming but received.

Live Genesis 32:10 today

  1. Instead of listing what you got done today, list three things you were given today that had nothing to do with your effort. Food you did not grow, a body that woke up, someone who was patient with you.
  2. When somebody offers you help, say yes without balancing the ledger. No favor returned, no insisting you are fine, just thank you.
  3. In a moment where you feel out of your depth, say so out loud rather than performing competence. The room usually moves toward people who admit they need something.

What have I been given that I have been telling myself I earned?

The usefulness of a cup is in its emptiness. What has room is what can be filled.

Zen

A student brought a full cup to the teacher and was told to empty it first. Nothing can be given to someone busy holding what they already have.

Poverty before the Beloved is not lack but open hands. The one who owns nothing is the one with room to receive everything.
