Genesis 32:28 Meaning He Said

He said, “Your name will no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have fought with God and with men, and have prevailed.”

What does Genesis 32:28 mean?

When a mind has faced itself and refused to leave the struggle unblessed, it receives a new name, which is simply the true one it always had beneath the false. The self of grasping is set aside and the self that walks with God is given, and this is the whole meaning of the miracle, a change only in what the mind knows itself to be.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

When a mind has faced itself and refused to leave the struggle unblessed, it receives a new name, which is simply the true one it always had beneath the false. The self of grasping is set aside and the self that walks with God is given, and this is the whole meaning of the miracle, a change only in what the mind knows itself to be. To have prevailed is not to have beaten an enemy but to have outlasted the illusion of one, holding on through the dark until only the truth was left.

The new name is what such a mind was before fear renamed it. Nothing was won that it did not already own; it merely stopped answering to the lie and remembered who it is.

Jacob: the old name of striving and grasping, the false identity the mind is finally ready to release Israel: the true name given in its place, the self that walks with God and was always waiting beneath the false one

MANIFESTATION

Manifestation

The change of name is a change of identity. Jacob is the supplanter, the man who wrestles to take a new self by persuasion, and Israel is what he becomes when he has held to that self until it is seen and won. A name in scripture is the state a man occupies, so to be renamed is to have shifted, in one's own depths, into a different man.

He prevails because he refused to let go until he was blessed, which is to say he clung to the assumed state through the long night against every feeling that it was not yet so, and would not release it. That refusal is the whole art. To have power with God and with men is to have found that the imagination one holds to becomes the fact one lives. In plain words, a man who takes up a new conception of himself and stays faithful to it until it hardens into experience has changed who he is, and everything around him answers to the change.

ESOTERIC

Esoteric

Jacob is the grasping lower self, named for the heel he clutched at birth, the part of a person that supplants and schemes to get ahead. Israel means the one in whom El, the divine, rules and prevails. To have the name changed after a night of wrestling is to have the higher nature win the long struggle against the lower, so that God governs the man rather than appetite. The prince who has power is consciousness itself, matured through conflict into command over its own house.

SELF-HELP

Self-Help

Change what a man is called and his behavior reorganizes itself to keep the new name honest.

The strongest force in a person is the drive to stay consistent with how they define themselves, so the definition gets changed before the conduct can. A new name alters the state a man carries toward the brother he wronged, the state sets what rises in him when they stand face to face, and that emotion decides whether he approaches or maneuvers.

Prevailing is not overpowering God; it is holding on until God is the one who says who he is. A man who has taken everything by grip and angle keeps doing it as long as supplanter is the truest name for him, since nothing a person does survives long against who he believes he is. Keep the old label and every blessing that comes gets handled by the same hands that took the first one.

Live Genesis 32:28 today

  1. Pick one label you use on yourself, the anxious one, the lazy one, the one who always messes this up, and stop using it today. When it shows up in your head, let it pass without agreeing.
  2. Say to someone close to you what you actually want to be like with them, in plain words, then act like that person for the rest of the evening. Not a promise, just a way of standing.
  3. When a stressful email or a tense moment at work tries to pull you back into the old reflex, hold on a few seconds longer than usual. Outlasting it once is how you find out it was never really you.
