Genesis 32:27 · World English Bible
He said to him, “What is your name?” He said, “Jacob”.
Before anything can change, a mind must say plainly who it has taken itself to be. To be asked its name and to answer is to confess the whole identity fear has assigned it, the self of striving and grasping it has worn so long it forgot it was a costume.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY
Before anything can change, a mind must say plainly who it has taken itself to be. To be asked its name and to answer is to confess the whole identity fear has assigned it, the self of striving and grasping it has worn so long it forgot it was a costume. There is no shame in this admission; it is the necessary honesty, for what is not named cannot be released, and what is hidden stays in charge. The mind that speaks its old name aloud has already loosened its hold on it.
Owning what one has believed oneself to be is the first step out of it. Only by naming the false self can a mind be given the true one that was always waiting underneath.
Name: the identity the mind has claimed as itself, the false self that must be spoken plainly before it can be laid down
Christian Psychology lens
What have I been calling myself for so long that I forgot it was a costume?
You cannot begin to improve while you are still pretending. Start by saying out loud and without excuse exactly what you are.
Clear seeing begins with naming what is here: this is craving, this is anger, this is fear. Nothing can be released while it is still disguised as simply me.
Knowing others is cleverness; knowing yourself is real clarity. The one who can say plainly who he has been is already freer than the one who cannot.
