They killed Hamor and Shechem, his son, with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah out of Shechem’s house, and went away.

What does Genesis 34:26 mean?

Here a mind answers a wound with a wound, certain that a real wrong has been done and can be set right by force. This is the ego's whole method laid bare: guilt is felt within, so it is thrown outward and cut down where it seems to stand in another.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

Here a mind answers a wound with a wound, certain that a real wrong has been done and can be set right by force. This is the ego's whole method laid bare: guilt is felt within, so it is thrown outward and cut down where it seems to stand in another. The sword feels like justice, yet it only repeats the very attack it means to end.

Innocence cannot be carried home on a blade. What a mind believes it recovers by killing it has merely hidden from itself again. The purity it wants was never lost in the other's house; it waits inside, untouched, the moment the mind lays the weapon down and forgives what it once called an enemy.

Sword: the mind's judgment turned into attack, the conviction that a wrong can be answered by wounding the one who seems to hold it. Dinah: the innocence the mind believes was taken and tries to seize back by force, though wholeness was never truly lost. Shechem's house: the place outside the self where guilt is imagined to live, the mirror in which the mind hunts its own condemnation.

  1. If you have been waiting for an apology before you can feel okay, try handing yourself the peace instead. You do not need their signature to put the thing down.
  2. With someone who hurt you and is still around, family, a coworker, pick one ordinary kindness today that you do not keep score of. Pass the coffee, hold the door, answer the question fully.
  3. When a conflict heats up and you can feel the clever, cutting line forming, let it go unsaid. Say the plain thing instead, even if it is only, I need a minute.

What am I trying to win back that was never actually taken from me?
