Genesis 37:8 Meaning His Brothers Asked Him
His brothers asked him, “Will you indeed reign over us? Will you indeed have dominion over us?” They hated him all the more for his dreams and for his words.

Genesis 37:8 · World English Bible
His brothers asked him, “Will you indeed reign over us? Will you indeed have dominion over us?” They hated him all the more for his dreams and for his words.
The question thrown at the dreamer, whether he means to rule and hold dominion, is the ego's oldest fear speaking, for it hears every vision of one mind raised up as a threat of being ruled by another. Where love sees a shared awakening, fear sees only a contest for the throne, and it hates whatever seems to place one part of the self above the rest.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY
The question thrown at the dreamer, whether he means to rule and hold dominion, is the ego's oldest fear speaking, for it hears every vision of one mind raised up as a threat of being ruled by another. Where love sees a shared awakening, fear sees only a contest for the throne, and it hates whatever seems to place one part of the self above the rest.
Yet the dream was never about mastery of others. What the brothers took for a bid to reign was simply a mind glimpsing its own larger truth, and their hatred grew because they read rising light as domination. A mind at peace can watch another rise and know that its own height rises with it.
Dreams: the mind's glimpses of a larger truth about itself, seen by fear as a claim to power and by love as the promise of a shared awakening. The brethren: the parts of the self that hear one mind's rising as a threat to rule them, and answer vision with hatred rather than welcome.

Whose rising have I been reading as my own shrinking?
The great person does not feel diminished by another's greatness, because they were never measuring. Rivalry needs a ruler, and they put the ruler down.
Sympathetic joy is the trained ability to be glad at someone else's good fortune. It is listed as a strength because it is the exact opposite of what fear does with good news.
Another person's advancement is outside your control and therefore not your loss. What is yours is how you meet the news.
