Genesis 39:21 Meaning But Yahweh Was with Joseph

But Yahweh was with Joseph, and showed kindness to him, and gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison.

What does Genesis 39:21 mean?

Even in confinement the mind can be kept in peace, for the prison is a condition of the body while love belongs to the mind that looks. The favor shown is not a change in the walls but a change in perception, the miracle that leaves the cell exactly as it was and transforms only the one who sees it.

Even in confinement the mind can be kept in peace, for the prison is a condition of the body while love belongs to the mind that looks. The favor shown is not a change in the walls but a change in perception, the miracle that leaves the cell exactly as it was and transforms only the one who sees it. Fear built the imprisonment; love makes it powerless from within.

So a mind joined to love is untouched by the place fear has set it in, because what holds it steady was never the walls.

Joseph: the part of the mind that stays with love even where fear has confined it Keeper of the prison: the guardian of limitation, softened when the mind refuses to see itself as trapped Prison: the body's confinement, real to fear and empty to the mind that has not left love

Even inside confinement the higher mind stays present, so that the very warden of the constricted state comes to favor the one it holds. The prison is the body under limitation, the narrowed condition a person passes through when the flesh presses in and the outer life closes down. Joseph carries the inner light unbroken into that place, and because he does, the keeper of the walls softens toward him; the constraint itself begins to serve the awakened faculty. Mercy here is the continued nearness of spirit that does not abandon a person when circumstances tighten around him.

The part of a person that is awake is not extinguished by hard limitation; presence goes on working even where the walls have closed.

The prison: the body under constraint, the narrowed condition a person endures when outer life closes down The keeper of the prison: the ruling force of the limited state, the warden of the flesh that comes to favor the light held within it Joseph: the awakened inner faculty that keeps its light unbroken inside confinement

Live Genesis 39:21 today

  1. In a situation you cannot change today, traffic, a diagnosis, a job you are stuck in, stop running the escape plan for ten minutes and just be in it. The walls stay, the clenching does not have to.
  2. With someone who is also stuck, drop the complaining for one conversation. Talk about something that is actually alive instead.
  3. When you are kept waiting, on hold, in a line, in a delayed train, let it be the hour you have rather than the hour taken from you. Same hour, different weight.

Where are you free already without having changed a thing?

Stoicism · Epictetus

They can chain the leg, not the mind that chooses. The cell holds a body and nothing else.

Buddhism · Dhammapada

No enemy can do you the harm your own untrained mind can. Train it and the harm has nowhere to land.

Taoism · Zhuangzi

Empty the mind and even a shut room has space in it. Zhuangzi calls this the fasting of the heart, where attention stops straining at the walls.
