Being handed other people to look after is what keeps a wronged man from rotting in the years he loses.

Grievance survives on uninterrupted attention, and other people's needs starve it. The attention moves, the state moves with it from wronged to useful, usefulness builds competence, and competence compounds into the administration a nation later hands to someone who trained for it in a prison.

Anything not growing is dying, and innocence exempts no one from that. A man can be entirely right about what was done to him and still rot, because the hours spent proving the case build nothing. Taking charge of other people costs him the satisfaction of that rehearsal and buys back the years it would have spent.

Live Genesis 39:22 today

  1. If there is a wrong you keep replaying in your head on the commute or in the shower, give that half hour to something a real person needs instead. Fix the leaky thing, answer the message you have been sitting on, cook something.
  2. Ask one person today how their week is actually going, and stay in the answer long enough to be useful. Your own case does not come up.
  3. When you are stuck somewhere you did not choose, a bad job, a slow line, a hold queue, look for the smallest thing you can take charge of there and take charge of it. Competence built in a place you resent still counts as competence.
