Genesis 42:38 · World English Bible

Genesis 42:38 Meaning He Said

He said, “My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he only is left. If harm happens to him along the way in which you go, then you will bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to Sheol.”

What does Genesis 42:38 mean?

The right side of the brain, the inner child that must be brought forth in meditation, is exactly what the aging self clenches against sending down into the lower mind. Benjamin, the son of the right hand, is the awakened right hemisphere, and the refusal to let him go is the pride and fear of a person unwilling to release that child into the region of bondage where the emotions and the carnal self rule.

The brother already lost to that darkness, and the gray hairs threatened with the grave, are the mind convinced that surrender means only death and never return. So the higher part is held back and kept from its work. What speaks here is the self gripping its last treasure, sure that to let it descend is to lose it for good.

Benjamin the son: the son of the right hand, the awakened right hemisphere and the inner child drawn out in meditation The grave: the descent into Egypt and matter, bondage to the lower mind and the emotions where the higher part fears to go Gray hairs: the aging self worn down by fear, certain that letting go means loss

Live Genesis 42:38 today

  1. Think of one thing you are protecting so carefully that you never actually use it: a plan, a hope, a talent, a saved idea. Take one small step with it today, even a messy one.
  2. With your kid, your partner, or a friend, let them try the thing their way without stepping in. Sit on your hands and let it go imperfectly.
  3. When fear says do not risk it, say out loud what you are actually afraid of losing. Named out loud, it usually turns out smaller than the silence made it.

What am I holding so tightly that I have stopped letting it live?

Tao Te Ching

What you grasp you lose. The open hand keeps what the clenched one crushes.

Buddhism

Suffering lives in the holding on. The fear that letting go means losing everything is itself the thing that keeps you small.

Stoicism · Epictetus

You do not own what you love, you hold it on loan. Clutching it tighter does not make it safer, it only makes you afraid.
