Genesis 42:8 · World English Bible
Joseph recognized his brothers, but they didn’t recognize him.
Love recognizes those who once turned against it, for it kept no record of the injury and so lost nothing of the bond. The mind that has healed knows them still as kin, while they, ruled by fear, cannot make out the face of the very one they think they harmed.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY
Love recognizes those who once turned against it, for it kept no record of the injury and so lost nothing of the bond. The mind that has healed knows them still as kin, while they, ruled by fear, cannot make out the face of the very one they think they harmed. Guilt blinds the eye that carries it. Before the brother they cannot recognize, they meet only a stranger with power over them, because their own condemnation has drawn a veil across what love sees plainly.
One mind remembers the tie and the other has forgotten it, and only the mind that remembers can restore what was broken.
Joseph: the part of the mind that has been forgiven and now looks with love, recognizing every brother as its own. Brethren: the aspects of the mind still asleep in guilt, unable to know the innocence standing before them.

SELF-HELP
Twenty years of guilt will build a story so complete that the living man in front of you disappears inside it.
Whoever holds the more current model of who is present decides what happens next. One man had been forced to revise his picture of everyone in the room, pit and prison rewriting what he knew about his brothers and himself; the others had been protected from revision by distance and by the story they kept telling at home.
A model no one has revised still runs the body: believing the man they wronged is finished sets a state of guarded caution before a foreign official, the caution shapes every answer, and the answers walk them deeper into a plan built by someone they cannot see. Running an old map costs them the mercy already standing in the room, since nothing can be received from a man they have filed as dead.
Christian Psychology lens
Who might already have let me off the hook while I keep serving the sentence?
The self in you and the self in the other are one thing looking at itself. What hides this is not distance but a film over the eye.
You have been searching for what was standing in front of you all along, and what kept you from seeing it was the story you told about yourself.
Shame narrows the eyes until everyone looks like a judge. Clear seeing is not an achievement, it is what is left when the self-accusation quiets down.
