Genesis 46:4 Meaning I Will Go Down with You Into

I will go down with you into Egypt. I will also surely bring you up again. Joseph’s hand will close your eyes.

What does Genesis 46:4 mean?

Love does not send the mind ahead alone and wait for its return. It descends with it into the world of appearances, and the same love raises it up again, so the whole passage through fear is companioned from beginning to end.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

Love does not send the mind ahead alone and wait for its return. It descends with it into the world of appearances, and the same love raises it up again, so the whole passage through fear is companioned from beginning to end. A mind afraid of going down into darkness is promised presence in the descent and certainty in the ascent.

The gentle hand laid upon the eyes at the last is the awakened self closing the sight that only ever saw a dream. What ends is not the mind but its false seeing, quieted tenderly by the very part it once believed destroyed.

Egypt: the world of appearances the mind must pass through, entered not alone but accompanied by love Joseph: the awakened self that lays its hand upon the eyes, the loving part that gently closes false sight at the end Eyes: the mind's perception, the dreaming vision that love at last quiets with a tender hand

  1. Next time you are dreading something at 2 a.m., stop trying to see the whole way through it. Picture only being accompanied through the next hour, then sleep, then the next hour.
  2. When a friend texts you from the middle of something awful, resist sending the fix. Reply that you are coming down into it with them, and then actually stay in the thread while it is still hard.
  3. Driving home after a day that went badly, close your eyes for a second at a red light and let the version of the day your mind keeps replaying go quiet. The replay is not the day. It is just tired seeing.

Where am I trying to walk through something alone that I was never asked to walk alone?

Zen

The teacher does not point to the mountain from the bottom and wait. They walk the path beside the student, and the walking is the teaching.

Sufism · Rumi

The one you are looking for is already with you on the road. You do not travel toward a love that stands still at the end.

Buddhism

What dies at the end is not you but the way of seeing that made a solid self out of a passing dream. The release is gentle, like a hand laid over tired eyes.
