Genesis 6:18 · World English Bible

Genesis 6:18 Meaning But I Will Establish My Covenant

But I will establish my covenant with you. You shall come into the ship, you, your sons, your wife, and your sons’ wives with you.

What does Genesis 6:18 mean?

The promise that holds through the flood is the mind's own agreement with love, unbreakable because love cannot forget itself. When fear seems to rise and drown the world, a shelter is prepared that fear cannot reach, and the mind enters it not by fleeing the body but by changing the teacher it listens to within.

Christian Psychology

The promise that holds through the flood is the mind's own agreement with love, unbreakable because love cannot forget itself. When fear seems to rise and drown the world, a shelter is prepared that fear cannot reach, and the mind enters it not by fleeing the body but by changing the teacher it listens to within.

The household gathered into safety is the whole company of the mind's faculties brought under one loving choice. Strength, receptivity, and the thoughts they beget all pass through the same door together. Wholeness is being saved as one, no part of the mind left outside to fear alone.

Ark: the refuge of right-mindedness, the state a mind enters when it lets love keep it while fear appears to flood the world. Sons: the strengths and active powers of the mind, the parts that will carry its chosen teaching forward. Wife: the receptive part of the mind that welcomes and unites with its own strength, the ground where love is joined and made whole. Sons' wives: the union of the mind's powers with what receives them, the inner joinings through which its faculties are made complete.

Live Genesis 6:18 today

  1. Make one small place in your day deliberately quiet: phone in another room, ten minutes, nothing to produce. Let it be the room nothing urgent gets into.
  2. When one person you live or work with is anxious, do not match the pitch. Stay steady and let your calm be the thing they can stand on.
  3. On a day that floods you, back to back calls, a pile of messages, take sixty seconds between two of them and breathe. The pile is still there; you came back first.

What in me stays calm even when everything on the surface is moving, and how often do I go there?

The same truth in other traditions

Bhagavad Gita 2

The self cannot be cut by weapons, burned by fire, or drowned by water. What you truly are is simply not in range of the flood.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

He described retreating into the citadel of his own mind, a shelter no outside storm could enter. You get there by turning inward, not by relocating.

Zen

The moon stays whole in the water however hard the wind blows the surface. Shelter is a steadiness, not a hiding place.
