Here the mind under the ego's rule is shown as it truly runs when love is not its teacher: every image it forms bends toward fear, and the stream of its thinking turns dark without pause. This is not a verdict on what a mind is but a description of what the ego alone produces, a machinery of thought that manufactures threat.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY
Here the mind under the ego's rule is shown as it truly runs when love is not its teacher: every image it forms bends toward fear, and the stream of its thinking turns dark without pause. This is not a verdict on what a mind is but a description of what the ego alone produces, a machinery of thought that manufactures threat.
The point is not despair but recognition. A mind can see at last how relentlessly fear has been thinking through it, and that seeing is the first crack of light. What is watched can be questioned, and what is questioned can be handed to a different teacher.
Earth: the mind's inner field, the whole reach of thought where fear has been left to sow without correction.

PSYCHOANALYSIS
Something in every person keeps producing dark thoughts: cruelty, envy, the wish to harm. They are not chosen. They rise from a layer of the mind a person did not build and cannot shut off. Most people refuse to look, and call themselves decent while that layer keeps working underneath.
A man certain he is only good has lost sight of his other half. Ignoring it changes nothing. The more he denies it, the more it shapes what he does, sometimes breaking out in acts he cannot explain. The heart runs to evil without stopping because these thoughts come from a part of him no one fully controls, and as long as he refuses to see them as his own, they keep steering what he does.

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY
The flood does not fall on the world from outside. It rises out of accumulated corruption, out of the small daily lies and the sins of omission that eat away at a structure until it can no longer stand. When the imagination of the heart turns entirely toward evil, and no one attends to the rot, the waters of chaos gather with a grim moral inevitability. What looks like blind catastrophe is the ledger coming due.
Moral order is no human invention you can vote away. It sits woven into the nature of things, so that a people who abandon it eventually meet hard consequences, the way a neglected levee gives way in the storm. Corruption plus willful blindness equals ruin, every time. The horror of the flood is that it was earned, quietly, over years, by everyone who looked away.

BUDDHISM
Citta: Heart-mind Citta is the heart taken as the seat of thought and feeling. The reckoning falls there first, before a single hand is raised, because conduct out in the earth overflows from what has already settled inside. A stream runs muddy the whole way down when the spring itself is muddy.
Akusalamūla: The unwholesome roots Three roots feed every unskillful act: greed, hate, and delusion. The charge of only evil narrows to a short list, wanting what belongs to another, wishing harm, and refusing to see straight, each one feeding the next. Roots work underground, so the surface can be corrupt everywhere at once while nobody can point to where it began.
Anusaya: Underlying tendencies Anusaya are dispositions lying dormant below awareness. No one sustains an evil thought around the clock, so the imaginations that keep returning have been waiting underneath between appearances, which is how a heart is evil continually rather than merely often. Coals banked under ash look dead until a draft reaches them.
Papañca: Proliferation Papañca is the mind's spinning of one impression into a tangle of thought. A single appetite never stays single; it branches into scenes, rehearsals, and plans, which is how the thoughts of a heart become every imagination. Crowded that thickly on the inside, a person is as full of it as the earth is.
Cetanā: Intention Cetanā is the volition that makes an act kamma. Imagination in the heart is the deed already in seed form, which is why the state of the heart and the wickedness of the earth are told in one breath: the second is the first grown up. Noah's neighbors stand under judgment for what they meant, and the meaning was in place long before any water rose.

SELF-HELP
The imagination running in the background when nothing is happening is what a whole life gets built out of.
Yahweh's measure lands on the default rather than the incident, because what a heart rehearses when no one is prompting it sets the state, the state decides which acts feel reasonable, and reasonable acts repeated across a generation become an age. A civilization can be read off the emotional home its people keep returning to.
Every private rehearsal is a repetition, and repetitions condition a nervous system until cruelty stops requiring a decision and simply arrives on schedule. That is how evil becomes continual instead of occasional. Leaving unforced thought unsupervised is not neutral: a person is training the home they will have to live inside.
Christian Psychology lens
If I watched my thoughts today like a friend watching over me, what would I see running on repeat?
All that we are arises from our thoughts; the mind untended runs to harm as water runs downhill. Watching it is where every change begins.
He kept returning to his own mind as the only place he could govern, examining each impression before granting it belief. The examining itself was the freedom.
The practice is the steady stilling of the mind's whirling, which begins the moment you can see the whirling as whirling and no longer mistake it for the world.
