Genesis 8:1 · World English Bible

Genesis 8:1 Meaning God Remembered Noah

God remembered Noah, all the animals, and all the livestock that were with him in the ship; and God made a wind to pass over the earth. The waters subsided.

What does Genesis 8:1 mean?

God's remembering is not a return of attention that had wandered; it is the mind at last remembering that it was never forgotten. What love holds it holds always, and when a mind accepts this, the swollen waters of guilt begin to fall, because guilt lives only on the belief that one has been abandoned.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

God's remembering is not a return of attention that had wandered; it is the mind at last remembering that it was never forgotten. What love holds it holds always, and when a mind accepts this, the swollen waters of guilt begin to fall, because guilt lives only on the belief that one has been abandoned.

The breath that passes over the flood is the correction love sends into a fearful mind, gentle and quiet, moving across the surface until the threat subsides. Every living thing sheltered with the mind is spared, for love overlooks nothing it created. The waters recede because the mind stops feeding them with the thought that it stands alone.

Wind: the breath of correction, the movement of love across a troubled mind that stills the risen fear. Cattle: the humble, instinctive contents of the mind, the simple thoughts sheltered and spared along with the rest. Ark: the refuge of right-mindedness, the safe center from which the mind watches its fear withdraw.

Live Genesis 8:1 today

  1. When the spiral starts, give it five minutes of simply breathing instead of five more minutes of thinking. Let the water settle rather than stirring it.
  2. Text or call the person you have been meaning to reach, not to explain yourself, just to be in contact. Loneliness feeds the flood more than the problem does.
  3. In the middle of a hard day, step outside for two minutes of air. Nothing is solved out there, but the fear gets smaller and your part of it gets clearer.

What settles in me when I stop stirring the water and stop believing I am in this alone?

The same truth in other traditions

Sufism · Rumi

The one you have been calling out to has been inside the call the whole time. You were never shouting into an empty house.

Zen · Hakuin

You are like someone standing in water crying out from thirst. The relief is not delivered later; it is what you have been standing in.

Tao Te Ching

Be still as muddied water is still, and it clears of itself. Nothing has to be forced out; the settling happens when you stop stirring.
