Genesis 9:20 Meaning Noah Began to Be a Farmer

Noah began to be a farmer, and planted a vineyard.

What does Genesis 9:20 mean?

Noah is the state of rest and inner refuge reached after the flood of the lower nature has spent itself, the head and mind come to quiet. To become a husbandman is for that settled self to begin cultivating within, and the vineyard he plants is the right hemisphere of the brain, the higher side where the wine of spirit is grown.

The drunkenness that soon follows is intoxication by that spirit, the awakened higher consciousness overtaking the man. What religion reads as a hero's shameful lapse is the settled inner self planting the luminous side of the brain and being overcome by the very spirit it raised.

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

Clinical Psychology

After the deluge has scoured the old world away, the survivor turns his hands to cultivation and begins the patient work of renewal. To plant a vineyard is to bet on a future, to press order into ground that the chaos has just finished drowning. The one who rebuilds a culture must expose himself to the raw and untamed. This planting is his first venture out of the ark's safety into the risk of making something new.

Security soothes us, and a predictable society answers our fear of the unknown. Yet a culture that grows too rigid guarantees its own destruction, and someone must always step past the walls to renew it. Noah is that someone here, the man willing to cultivate again after everything was lost. He plants. The renewal of the world begins with a single act of hopeful, exposed labor.

Live Genesis 9:20 today

  1. Once the current crisis actually ends, plant something small instead of filling the space with noise. Ten pages of a real book, a walk without the phone, a sketch. Rest is the start of growing, not the end of it.
  2. Spend an hour with someone where nothing is being solved. No logistics, no venting, no screens on the table. Just sit with them. Easy time with people is a slow crop, and it only comes in if you plant it.
  3. When something good finally opens in you, a wave of relief, joy, a new clarity, and you feel the urge to post it or chase more of it, hold still instead. The spirit you raised can knock you over. Let it settle before you act on it.

What have I been meaning to tend in myself, once things calm down, that is quietly waiting for me to actually begin?

Zen · Ox-herding pictures

After the long struggle with the wild ox is over, the pictures show a person going home and tending ordinary ground. The real cultivation starts once the fighting stops.

Tao Te Ching 48

In the practice of the way, you keep taking away rather than piling on, until the doing happens by itself. What grows after that is not your effort, it is what the quiet produced.

Buddhism · The Dhammapada 1

The opening lines say everything we are follows from what we have thought. Whatever is planted in the mind is what a person ends up living inside.
