Genesis 9:21 · World English Bible

Genesis 9:21 Meaning He Drank of the Wine and Got

He drank of the wine and got drunk. He was uncovered within his tent.

What does Genesis 9:21 mean?

Wine is the concentrated life-force rising through the body, and taken without measure it floods the mind past its banks, so the man who has just walked out of the flood now drowns in a smaller one inside himself. Drunkenness is consciousness overwhelmed by its own vital fire, sense loosened until judgment sleeps.

Esoteric

Wine is the concentrated life-force rising through the body, and taken without measure it floods the mind past its banks, so the man who has just walked out of the flood now drowns in a smaller one inside himself. Drunkenness is consciousness overwhelmed by its own vital fire, sense loosened until judgment sleeps. Within the tent, the covering of the flesh falls open, and what the higher mind kept hidden lies exposed. The same fire that carries a person through the waters can, undisciplined, undo the very self it was meant to raise.

Wine: the vital energy and inner fluid of the body, sweetness that lifts the mind when measured and floods it when not. Tent: the fleshly body pitched around the soul, a thin covering that keeps the inner life screened from view.

Live Genesis 9:21 today

  1. Watch one thing you reach for too much today, the scroll, the drink, the fourth coffee, the late-night episode. Do not quit it. Just stop one notch earlier than usual and feel what that is like.
  2. When you are lit up and talking fast with someone, pause and let them speak. The energy that makes you interesting at nine can make you careless at eleven. Letting someone else hold the room keeps you from spilling.
  3. Under pressure, when you can feel yourself getting loose and ready to say the thing that will land hard, step out. Bathroom, hallway, parking lot. Thirty seconds of air keeps the fire doing its job instead of burning the house.

What good fire in me have I been feeding past the point where it warms anything?

The same truth in other traditions

Buddhism · The middle way

The teaching warns off both starving yourself and indulging yourself, and points to the measured path between them. The same energy either carries you or wrecks you, depending on measure.

Stoicism · Epictetus

He said at a banquet to take a reasonable share and let the dish pass. Wanting more than your portion is how a good thing turns into a chain.

Bhagavad Gita 6

The practice does not belong to the one who takes too much or too little, but to the one who keeps a measure in eating, sleeping and working. Discipline is not denial, it is proportion.
