An idol is something a man builds with his own hands and then bows down to, forgetting that he built it. That is the peculiar tragedy the prophet names. A person carves a partial thing, a fragment of value, elevates it to the status of a god, and organizes his whole life around it. Money, ideology, a flattering self-image, any single good raised above all others hardens into a graven image, and it teaches lies precisely because it cannot speak.
The dumb idol offers no correction. A false god says nothing back, so the man who trusts it never learns he is wrong. He has traded the living process of orienting himself toward the highest good for a fixed object he can control. The thing you make cannot save you, and the moment you worship your own creation, you stop growing.
