CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

Clinical Psychology

The ritual was never the point, and a person can perform every outward act of devotion while offering nothing of himself. Slaughter a hundred animals on the altar and remain exactly the man you were. What is asked for is harder than any ceremony, because it demands the surrender of the very thing you are protecting inside yourself.

Guilt cannot be discharged by proxy. No creature dies in your place for the resentment you refuse to release. The offering that matters is the part of your own character you would rather keep hidden, laid down where it can finally be seen and changed.

Live Hebrews 10:6 today

  1. Think of one grudge you are still feeding, and drop it instead of explaining it again. Nobody has to know you let it go.
  2. With one person today, admit the small thing you have been covering: the mistake, the sharp tone, the part where you were wrong. Say it plainly and do not soften it into a story that makes you look better.
  3. When you get criticized today, in a meeting or a message, resist the urge to perform agreement while privately defending yourself. Sit with the part of it that is true.

What am I protecting right now that I would rather keep out of sight?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching 38

When the real thing fades, elaborate ritual rushes in to fill the gap. The more ceremony a person needs, the less is actually alive underneath it.

Stoicism · Epictetus

You cannot buy off a fault with offerings or appearances. The only thing truly yours to give up is your own judgment and the grip you keep on it.

Zen

A bucket of incense will not clean a dirty mind. What has to be set down is the thing you are holding, not something you can purchase and hand over.
