Everything perishes except His Face: only one thing stays standing Sufis repeat this line of the Quran, since nearly everything a person leans on can be taken away: health, money, a title, someone's good regard. Losing one of them shows plainly which supports were only on loan. Leaning on the one support that was never at risk is what finally steadies a person.

Baqāʾ: Remaining Junayd taught that when the self loosens its grip, a person does not vanish; something remains. That remainder never depended on being held together by the person, so it outlasts what they cannot hold. Losing plans or standing no longer knocks someone over, because they were never balanced on those in the first place.

Shukr: Gratitude Al-Ghazali described gratitude as using a gift the way the giver meant it to be used. Thanks that leaves a person's days unchanged stops well short of that. Someone handed what they could never have built for themselves starts spending their time differently, and the change itself is the thanks.

ʿUbūdiyya: Servanthood Ibn Arabi held that a person's highest standing is to be a servant. Serving can sound like a step down, until someone has spent years carrying everything alone and answering to no one. Service gives a person somewhere steady to put their strength, and the constant checking of where they rank quietly drops away.

Haybah: Awe Sufi teachers speak of awe and closeness as a pair that grows together. Feeling small before God and feeling safe with God arrive in the same moment, not in turns. A person who holds both handles the closeness carefully, staying aware of who it is they have been let near.

Live Hebrews 12:28 today

  1. Think of one thing you would be shaken to lose: the job, the savings, someone's respect. Say to yourself plainly that it could go, and that you would still be here, and sit with that for a minute before you pick your phone back up.
  2. Thank one person today by doing something, not by saying something. Cover a shift, drive them somewhere, pay for the coffee, so the gratitude costs you a little and actually lands.
  3. In the meeting or the group chat where you usually check how you rank, put your effort into making the thing work instead. Let someone else take the credit and see how much lighter the hour feels.

What have I been standing on that could be taken from me this year?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching 44

The more you pile up, the more there is to lose, and the person who leans on what can be taken is never at rest. What cannot be taken asks nothing of you to keep it.

Stoicism · Epictetus

Sort your life into what is yours and what is only on loan, since health, money and other people's good opinion were never in your keeping. Stand on the part that no one can reach and nothing can shake you.

Hinduism · Bhagavad Gita 2

What truly is cannot be destroyed, and what passes was never the ground anyway. Knowing the difference is what steadies a person in gain and in loss.
