PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

When people meet the deepest center of themselves, something far larger than their everyday self, they often describe it as fire. It does not warm. It burns away everything false they built to feel safe: the mask worn for others, the flattering self-image.

A man once dreamed of standing in a burning house, oddly calm, as if the flames took only what was never his. This is why God is called a fire. Meeting what is greatest within us destroys the small self we cling to, and what remains, once the pretending burns off, is the person we actually are.

  1. Reread something you posted or sent recently and ask, honestly, whether you wrote it as yourself or as the version of you that wants to look good.
  2. With one person you trust, say the plain true thing instead of the polished one. Drop the performance for a single conversation and feel what is left.
  3. When you are criticized today and your instinct is to defend yourself, wait three seconds first. Ask whether you are protecting the truth or just protecting the image.

What would still be standing in you if the version you show other people burned away?

Sufism · Rumi

The fire does not harm you, it takes the masks. What burns off was never actually part of you.

Buddhism

The Buddha taught that clinging to a fixed picture of who we are is the root of our suffering. Letting that picture go feels like loss and turns out to be freedom.
