Hebrews 13:1 Meaning Let Brotherly Love Continue

Let brotherly love continue.

What does Hebrews 13:1 mean?

Love among believers already exists; the work is keeping it alive when the first warmth cools. Continuing is harder than starting, because it means loving people after they have disappointed you and after the novelty of the community has worn off.

Calling one another brothers is a claim about blood, not sentiment. Baptism makes people family, and family is not a group you assemble from those you find agreeable. You are handed your relatives. That is why this charity is commanded rather than suggested, and why the word is continue: a habit that must be renewed daily, deliberately, in small acts that nobody applauds.

Live Hebrews 13:1 today

  1. Think of someone in your circle who has disappointed you, and do one small ordinary thing for them today anyway. Nobody has to know you did it.
  2. Reply properly to the group chat message you have been leaving unanswered because you are tired of those people. One sentence with real warmth in it.
  3. When someone you are stuck with is at their most annoying, in the kitchen, in the meeting, in the car, stay in the room and stay kind. Love that only works on good days is not love yet.

Who have I quietly stopped putting effort into, and what is one unremarkable thing I could do for them today?

The same truth in other traditions

Confucianism · the Analects

Goodness is not a feeling that visits but a practice you keep up, day after day, in how you treat the people closest to you. The ordinary daily version is the real version.

Buddhism · metta practice

Kindness is trained, starting with those easy to love and widened on purpose to the ones who grate on you. It grows by repetition, not by inspiration.

Judaism · Pirkei Avot

Be one who loves peace and pursues it, and judge every person generously. Pursuing means going after it again after it has slipped away.
