Hebrews 4:1 Meaning Let’s Fear Therefore

Let’s fear therefore, lest perhaps anyone of you should seem to have come short of a promise of entering into his rest.

What does Hebrews 4:1 mean?

There is a rest that has nothing to do with sleep or with stopping your work. It is the deep stillness that arrives when the restless, striving mind grows quiet and you are no longer at war with the present moment.

Ego v. Being

There is a rest that has nothing to do with sleep or with stopping your work. It is the deep stillness that arrives when the restless, striving mind grows quiet and you are no longer at war with the present moment. This peace has been offered to you, and it waits closer than your own breath.

The danger is not that you might fail some test. It is that you may spend your whole life reaching toward that rest as a future goal and so keep missing it, when it can only be entered now. You come short of it only by looking elsewhere for what is already here.

Live Hebrews 4:1 today

  1. Today, when you think I will relax once this is finished, see that thought for what it is and take one easy breath right in the middle of the unfinished thing.
  2. When someone asks how you are and you start to say busy, pause and actually check. Answer from how you feel now, not from your calendar.
  3. Under pressure this afternoon, let your shoulders drop and keep working. You can do the hard thing without the clenching that usually comes with it.

What are you waiting to finish before you let yourself be at peace?

The same truth in other traditions

Zen

A student asks how to reach the way. The teacher says you are standing on it, and the asking is what carries you off.

Tao Te Ching

Stop striving and things settle on their own. The water clears when you leave it alone.

Buddhism

The mind that is always leaning into the next moment never tastes this one. Peace is not at the end of the road, it is under your feet.
