Hebrews 7:20 Meaning Inasmuch as He Was Not Made Priest

Inasmuch as he was not made priest without the taking of an oath

What does Hebrews 7:20 mean?

The priest here is made by an oath, a vow fixed and unbreakable, and that is the mark that separates this priesthood from the old handed-down office of the clergy. The priest is the self able to cross the arachnoid, the thin web that veils the brain's holy of holies, and pass through into the pia mater within.

The priest here is made by an oath, a vow fixed and unbreakable, and that is the mark that separates this priesthood from the old handed-down office of the clergy. The priest is the self able to cross the arachnoid, the thin web that veils the brain's holy of holies, and pass through into the pia mater within. What lets that self hold its place there is not lineage or ceremony but the oath, an inner vow that once made cannot be revoked.

So the crossing is sealed. The lower man reaches the veil and, bound by that fixed vow, does not slip back; the priest within stands permanently at the inner membrane rather than at any outer altar. Being made priest by an oath means the part of a person that can enter the innermost room of the head is set there for good, no longer able to be undone.

Priest: the self within a person able to cross the arachnoid veil and enter the innermost chamber of the brain Oath: the fixed inner vow that, once made, cannot be revoked, sealing that self in its inner place Arachnoid: the thin web veiling the brain's holy of holies, the membrane the inner self must pass through

Live Hebrews 7:20 today

  1. Make one decision today once, so you stop deciding it hourly. No phone in bed, or you take the stairs, or you do not open work email after dinner. Settle it and let it hold you.
  2. Tell one person the thing you have committed to. Saying it out loud to someone who will remember turns a wish into something with a floor under it.
  3. When the hard moment comes, the tense call, the late night, the argument you want to win, lean on the decision you already made instead of making a fresh one while your heart is pounding.

What have I decided deeply enough that I no longer have to argue with myself about it?

Say little and do it. A word given and kept becomes the floor you stand on, while a word given lightly drops you through.

Decide once what kind of person you are, and stop relitigating it every morning. The settled choice carries you through moods that would otherwise undo you.

Vows are taken not because feeling will always be there but because it will not. The commitment holds the ground when the mood walks off.
