CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

Clinical Psychology

The farming image is exact and merciless. What you plow is what you harvest, and no one is spared the crop of his own actions. Plant deceit and you will eat deceit, season after season, until the whole field is poisoned.

The root cause is named at the end: trust in your own way and in the number of your strong men. A person who leans entirely on his own cleverness and force mistakes the size of his army for the soundness of his direction. Power aimed wrongly only accelerates the ruin. Reality has a structure, and you cannot plow against it and expect a decent harvest.

  1. Find the one small untruth you tell regularly, about your schedule, your reading, your spending. Stop telling that one today and see what it costs.
  2. In your next hard conversation, do not win it. Aim to describe your side accurately and let the other person be right where they are right.
  3. When you feel like pushing harder on something that is already failing, stop and ask whether the direction is wrong. More effort down a bad road just arrives sooner.

The same truth in other traditions

Buddhism · Samyutta Nikaya

According to the seed that is sown, so is the fruit reaped. A person harvests the nature of his own acts, and no cleverness changes the crop.

Tao Te Ching 30

Where armies march, thorns and brambles grow. Whoever leans on force has already lost the thing force was meant to protect.

Stoicism · Marcus Aurelius

What harms a person is not the obstacle outside but his own choices turning rotten. Nothing external can plant that field for him.
