Isaiah 1:2 · World English Bible

Isaiah 1:2 Meaning Hear

Hear, heavens, and listen, earth; for Yahweh has spoken: “I have nourished and brought up children and they have rebelled against me.

What does Isaiah 1:2 mean?

Heaven and earth are the 2 poles of a single person, the higher mind above and the body below, called together to hear one voice, because the whole man is the audience of his own inner speech. The children raised and then in revolt are the powers of consciousness that the spirit has fed and grown, yet they turn back toward the flesh and forget their source.

Everything within a person is nourished by the one life at the center, and everything within a person is capable of turning away from it, of spending its strength downward instead of rising.

The complaint is not against a distant nation but against the divided man, the being whose own faculties, given light and growth, wander back toward the earth that bore the body.

Heavens: the higher mind of a person, the upper realm of thought and spirit within Earth: the body and its lower ground, the material floor of a person's being Children: the powers and faculties of consciousness that the inner life feeds and raises up

Live Isaiah 1:2 today

  1. Pick one thing you do on autopilot today, scrolling at a red light, opening the fridge, checking notifications, and when you catch yourself in it, pause for three breaths before continuing. You are calling a wandering part of you back home.
  2. At dinner or on a call, give the person your full attention for the first five minutes, phone face down and out of reach. Your attention is one of your children, and it has been running loose.
  3. When you are stressed and you feel every part of you reaching for the easy comfort, food, a screen, a quick snap at someone, name it out loud to yourself: this is me spending myself downward. Then pick one small thing that lifts instead.

Which of my own powers have I been feeding, and which have I let wander off?

Bhagavad Gita 6

The mind is your closest friend when it is turned toward the deeper self, and your worst enemy when it runs loose. The same faculty serves or betrays, depending on which way it faces.

Stoicism · Epictetus

You have been given reason, attention and will as your own possessions, and they are either put to work on what is highest in you or squandered on appetite and other people's opinions.

Buddhism · Dhammapada 1

Everything follows the mind, the way a cart follows the ox. A mind that drifts downward drags the whole life after it.
