Isaiah 25:8 · World English Bible

Isaiah 25:8 Meaning He Has Swallowed Up Death Forever

He has swallowed up death forever! The Lord Yahweh will wipe away tears from off all faces. He will take the reproach of his people away from off all the earth, for Yahweh has spoken it.

What does Isaiah 25:8 mean?

Death is not defeated by escaping it but by seeing through it. What you take yourself to be, the bundle of memories and fears wearing your name, does end.

Ego v. Being

Death is not defeated by escaping it but by seeing through it. What you take yourself to be, the bundle of memories and fears wearing your name, does end. Yet the awareness in which that self appears was never born, so it cannot die. It swallows death whole, from the inside.

Then the tears are wiped away. Not by pretending the grief was nothing, but because the one who wept has found solid ground beneath the loss. The promise is that every face, in time, comes to rest in what cannot be taken.

Live Isaiah 25:8 today

  1. When grief comes up today, do not argue with it or hurry it. Let the tears be real and feel that something in you is holding them without breaking.
  2. If a friend is mourning, skip the line about them being in a better place. Sit with them, let it be heavy, and stay anyway.
  3. Scrolling past hard news, stop on one story instead of swiping. Feel it for a moment, and feel the steadiness in you that can feel it.

What in you has stayed the same through everything you have lost?

The same truth in other traditions

Bhagavad Gita

Weapons do not cut it, fire does not burn it, water does not wet it. What you are at the deepest level was never created and so has nothing to lose.

Zen

Waves rise and fall and the ocean is not diminished. The form goes; what the form was made of does not go anywhere.

Taoism · Zhuangzi

Life and death are day and night, turning into each other the way seasons do. The one who sees the turning stops dreading one half of it.
