Whatever a people choose as their guarantee of safety decides the exact shape of what overtakes them. Choosing speed as the answer to fear sets the terms of the contest, and the terms are the part nobody gets to negotiate.

SELF-HELP
Whatever a people choose as their guarantee of safety decides the exact shape of what overtakes them.
Choosing speed as the answer to fear sets the terms of the contest, and the terms are the part nobody gets to negotiate. Certainty was the need running underneath, and horses were the fastest vehicle in sight for people who had been offered rest and could not sit still long enough to take it.
Believing safety is something a nation outruns sets the emotion, the emotion picks the vehicle, and the vehicle decides the speed of everything that follows. Buying certainty with horses buys a faster pursuit, and it costs them the rest already on the table, traded for a chase with no finish.
Self-Help lens
What am I trying to outrun, and what would it cost me to stop and let it reach me?
Hurry past the thing and you arrive nowhere. Stillness gets there sooner than speed ever does.
Running from the fear feeds it. What you were fleeing arrives at whatever pace you set.
You can change cities and ships and still be chased, because what pursues you is traveling inside you. Rest is available where you already are.
