EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

A frightened people run to a great power for rescue, and the running comes to nothing. All that outward help, all that anxious doing, is spent in vain, because the trouble they flee cannot be fixed by more motion.

Their strength is to sit still. Not to give up, but to stop the compulsive reaching for the next thing and be here, present, without struggle against the moment. In stillness the mind's noise settles and a clarity arrives that no amount of frantic effort could produce. This is why sitting still is called their strength: the answer they were chasing elsewhere was waiting in the quiet they kept running from.

PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

When we feel threatened, we reach for a rescuer outside ourselves: a powerful nation, an institution, a strong figure to lean on.

The mind takes its own buried strength and hangs it on something outside. So the mighty helper is a picture we painted, a great beast that looks fearsome and only sits there. A man who ran from one authority to the next, sure each would rescue him, kept finding nothing there. The rescuer does nothing, because the strength was never in it. It was ours from the start, and no one can use it for us.

Live Isaiah 30:7 today

  1. When the urge comes to fix something right now by sending one more message, sit with your hands still for two minutes first. Often the next move becomes obvious, and often it is fewer moves.
  2. If someone comes to you worked up, resist the pull to immediately solve it. Just be steady and present with them. Your calm does more than your advice.
  3. In the middle of a stressful stretch, stop refreshing, stop searching, stop asking around. Give yourself five quiet minutes and let clarity come to you instead of chasing it.

What am I running toward because sitting still feels like doing nothing?
