Isaiah 35:1 Meaning The Wilderness and the Dry Land Will

The wilderness and the dry land will be glad. The desert will rejoice and blossom like a rose.

What does Isaiah 35:1 mean?

The wilderness and the desert are the dry, barren regions of consciousness, the parts of a person left arid and unlived where no inner growth has stirred, the stretches of the mind emptied of feeling and light. Their gladness is the sudden watering of those dead areas when the awakened current at last reaches them, the parched inner ground quickening as life spreads into what had been abandoned.

The solitary place is the isolated faculty long cut off from the whole.

The rose is the opened center of feeling that unfolds in that revived ground, the flower of awareness blooming where nothing could grow before. Its blossoming is the barren self coming alive, the dry places of a person filling with the same inner life that has already risen elsewhere.

Wilderness: the dry, barren region of consciousness left arid and unlived, where no inner growth has stirred. Solitary place: the isolated faculty long cut off from the whole of the self. Desert: the emptied stretch of mind, drained of feeling and light, waiting to be watered. Rose: the opened center of feeling that unfolds and blooms in the revived ground.

Live Isaiah 35:1 today

  1. Pick one part of your life you quietly gave up on, a skill you dropped, a kind of music you stopped listening to, a room you stopped sitting in. Give it twenty minutes today with your phone in another room.
  2. Reach out to one person you let drift, not with an apology or an explanation, just a message about something real. Dry ground between two people waters fast.
  3. When you catch yourself saying "that part of me is dead" today, in a meeting, in traffic, in your own head at 10pm, change it to "that part of me has not been watered." Then say what one cup of water would look like this week.

Which stretch of your life have you been calling dead when you only stopped tending it?

Zhuangzi

The useless tree, the crooked and passed-over one, is the tree that lives longest and gives the widest shade. What a person has written off as barren is often the part still holding its whole life in reserve.

Zen · Dogen

Practice is not adding something new to yourself. It is water reaching ground that was always there, so the flower that opens was never imported from outside.

Sufism · Rumi

The Masnavi opens with a reed cut from the reed bed, and says it is the cutting that lets it make music. The dry severed place is where the song comes through.
