Isaiah 35:3 Meaning Strengthen the Weak Hands

Strengthen the weak hands, and make the feeble knees firm.

What does Isaiah 35:3 mean?

The fastest route into a different emotion runs through posture and breath, not through trying to feel differently. Fear shows in the body before anyone admits it in words, which makes the body the place to intervene.

Self-Help

The fastest route into a different emotion runs through posture and breath, not through trying to feel differently.

Fear shows in the body before anyone admits it in words, which makes the body the place to intervene. Move the hands, set the knees, and the breath changes with them; the state follows the breath, and a road that looked impossible becomes walkable.

The instruction goes to another person's body because a frightened person's own language has gone slack, and the one lever left is the one somebody else can reach. Behind it comes focus, aimed at the God who is coming to save, since physiology and attention move together or neither moves. Someone told only to take heart stays exactly where they are, and the help that would have arrived through their hands never gets offered.

Live Isaiah 35:3 today

  1. When dread lands on you at your desk, stand up before you try to think your way out. Feet flat, shoulders back and down, three slow breaths out longer than in, then sit back down and start.
  2. If someone you love is sunk in a chair telling you they cannot face it, do not start with advice. Get them up, hand them a glass of water, walk them around the block, and let the conversation happen while you are both moving.
  3. Before the meeting where you have to speak, find a quiet corner or the stairwell. Drop your shoulders, plant both feet, breathe out slowly twice, and walk in from that body instead of from your nerves.

What does your body already do when you are afraid, and what would it take to change that first?

The same truth in other traditions

Taoism · Zhuangzi

The skilled person works from a settled body, breath low and even, and the task that defeats a tense man comes apart easily in relaxed hands.

Zen

Sitting instruction begins with the spine, the knees, the hands, the breath. The mind is not ordered to calm down; it follows the body that already has.

Hinduism · Bhagavad Gita 6

Hold the body steady, head and neck and back in one line, and steady breathing follows. Only then does the restless mind come to rest.
