Isaiah 42:19 · World English Bible

Isaiah 42:19 Meaning Who Is Blind

Who is blind, but my servant? Or who is as deaf as my messenger whom I send? Who is as blind as he who is at peace, and as blind as Yahweh’s servant?

What does Isaiah 42:19 mean?

The one carrying the message is the most likely to miss it. Knowledge settles over experience like dust, and after years of repeating what was once seen, a man handles it as a possession rather than a shock.

AWARENESS

Indian Guru

The one carrying the message is the most likely to miss it. Knowledge settles over experience like dust, and after years of repeating what was once seen, a man handles it as a possession rather than a shock. Familiarity is a subtler sleep than ignorance, because the ignorant at least know they are thirsty.

The peace here is the dangerous kind, the contentment of someone who stopped inquiring because the answers arrived early and were never questioned again. Real seeing burns and undoes the seer each time. Anyone able to speak of the ultimate without trembling is speaking from memory.

Live Isaiah 42:19 today

  1. Take something you are sure about, a belief, a read on a person, a rule you live by, and sit with the honest question of how you would know if it were wrong. You do not have to change it today. Just let it be open again.
  2. The next time you explain something you have explained many times, at work, to your kids, in a group chat, slow down and say it as if it were new. If it comes out automatic and smooth, you are reciting, not seeing.
  3. In a disagreement today, try saying "I don't know" out loud and meaning it. Watch how fast something in you wants to grab the certainty back.

What do I repeat so easily that I have stopped actually looking at it?

Zen

Beginner's mind holds everything; the expert's mind is already full. The one who knows has the harder time seeing.

Tao Te Ching

The one who knows does not speak with certainty. Once it has been said smoothly, something of it has already been lost.

Sufism

The dervish prays to be kept a beginner. The danger is not doubt, it is the comfort of answers that were never asked again.
