Isaiah 44:17 · World English Bible

Isaiah 44:17 Meaning The Rest of It He Makes Into

The rest of it he makes into a god, even his engraved image. He bows down to it and worships, and prays to it, and says, “Deliver me; for you are my god!”

What does Isaiah 44:17 mean?

The need behind the bowing is sane; what a man builds to meet it decides whether he is answered. Fear produces the most driving need a person ever feels, and a need that urgent will accept a vehicle the man watched himself make.

The need behind the bowing is sane; what a man builds to meet it decides whether he is answered.

Fear produces the most driving need a person ever feels, and a need that urgent will accept a vehicle the man watched himself make. Believing deliverance is now secured drops him into a calmer state, the calm feels like proof, the proof keeps him kneeling, and kneeling hardens into a practice that organises a whole life around something with no capacity to act.

The cry is the honest part of him. Deliverance is a real need and there is a God who answers it; the carved half of a log is not that God. What this costs is a lifetime of maintenance paid to a thing that needs him more than he needs it, while the fear that drove him there is never once addressed.

Live Isaiah 44:17 today

  1. Ask what you have been quietly counting on to keep you safe, a number in an account, a job title, one person's approval. Say it plainly to yourself, no judgment, and ask whether it can actually do that.
  2. When a friend is frantic about something small, do not argue with the small thing. Ask what they are afraid of underneath it, and stay while they answer.
  3. Next time you reach for your phone the second you feel uneasy, let the unease stay for sixty seconds instead. Then take whatever it is to God rather than to the screen.

What have you been maintaining that was supposed to be taking care of you?

Some things are in your power and some are not. Put your hope in what cannot act and you have handed your peace to something that does not have any.

The craving is real and the relief it reaches for is real. The object it grabs cannot hold the weight, so the grabbing never ends.

People pray to many smaller things, and the longing underneath is genuine. It is only aimed at what cannot answer.
