Ghaflah: Heedlessness Heedlessness is the mind running on without ever stopping to look. Someone in it has no argument to make; the question simply never comes up, because the day is full and the habits are set. A person can live that way for years and feel perfectly fine, since nothing inside sends up a warning that anything is missing.

Al-ilāh al-makhlūq fī al-iʿtiqād: The god a person makes inside their own belief Ibn Arabi's name for worshiping the picture of God you assembled yourself. Such a picture never feels like an opinion; it feels like the plain facts, so nobody thinks to check it. A person can defend it, build a whole life on it, and never once see that the thing they trusted came out of their own head.

Rayn: Rust on the heart Rust builds on a heart the way it builds on any metal left outside, slowly and from small things. Al-Ghazali describes the heart as a mirror that stops giving back a clear picture once it tarnishes. No single choice does it, and by the end a person cannot make anything out, though no moment along the way felt like a decision.

Khatm al-qalb: The sealing of the heart The Quran speaks of hearts sealed shut, with the closing laid at God's door. Teachers take this as the far end of a road the person walked themselves, where looking away often enough turns into being unable to look. The weight of it is that nobody feels the moment it happens, and by then nothing inside is left to sound an alarm.

Blindness is not in the eyes but in the hearts inside the chests: the loss sits deeper than eyesight A line from the Quran that Sufis come back to again and again. Someone can see perfectly, read everything, argue circles around you, and still take in nothing that matters. The part of a person that weighs things and decides what to trust is where sight lives, and while it stays shut, more information changes nothing.

Live Isaiah 44:18 today

  1. Pick one thing you are sure about today and ask yourself honestly where you first got it, and whether you ever checked.
  2. When someone says something you disagree with, hear them all the way out without planning your reply underneath.
  3. When you feel the sting of being wrong in front of people, stay in it for a second instead of defending, because that sting is the first thing in a while that got through.

What have I stopped questioning simply because I have believed it a long time?

Ignorance here is not a lack of facts but a film over seeing, and it is comfortable enough that nobody goes looking for it. The sleep feels exactly like being awake.

People chained facing a wall take the shadows for the whole world, and nothing in the shadows ever says otherwise. The trouble is not bad eyesight but never having turned around.
