Tawḥīd: Oneness Al-Ghazali described this growing from a phrase people repeat into something a person sees everywhere. At first the claim of one God sits quietly alongside a private list of other powers: money, luck, the people who can help you or hurt you. Oneness settles in when that list loses its grip and the heart stops dividing its trust. A person then deals with one source instead of negotiating with many.
To God belong the East and the West: no place is outside Him The Quran follows this with the promise that wherever you turn, God's face is there. Most of us carry a private map of where God can be reached: certain places, certain moods, certain stretches when life is going well. Everywhere else feels like open country where you are on your own. The line erases that map, so the far corners of a life stop counting as abandoned ground.
Tawḥīd al-afʿāl: one doer behind everything that happens Al-Ghazali taught that whatever hand you can see, the act traces back to God. We sort the people around us into helpers and obstacles, then spend enormous energy managing that list. Under this teaching they stay exactly where they are, but they become the route rather than the source. Help can arrive through someone who never intended it and believes none of this.
Shirk khafī: hidden idolatry A saying of the Prophet calls this quieter than an ant walking. Few people set up a rival to God on purpose, yet most of us have something we cannot bear to lose: a reputation, one person's approval, a bank balance standing between us and fear. That thing collects the trust and the worry meant for God. Seeing it for what it is loosens its hold before anything else changes.
Fanāʾ: the self passing away Junayd described the point where a person stops standing in the middle of their own life. A claim this total presses hardest on the small voice that keeps score: my effort, my name, my share. That voice goes quiet on its own, having lost interest in the argument. The work still gets done, and no one is left inside it claiming credit.

Where on my private map have I decided God cannot be reached?
The Tao runs everywhere, left and right, with no corner it skips and no fanfare where it arrives. There is no region of life it has opted out of.
There is no place empty of him. The ordinary kitchen and the ordinary street are not lesser ground that he happens to avoid.
Teachers kept sending students back to carrying water and chopping wood. The practice does not happen somewhere else, so the dull part of the day is the whole of the ground you were given.
